We often hear, "This is a Safe Space"
That phrase has become commonplace in recent years, and it's lovely. We use it to encourage vulnerability, to communicate to those under threat or at risk of harm that they can take solace with us. We use it as a catalyst to invite people to learn, and to demonstrate that we have conscientiously prepared an environment to be conducive to healing and growth. 

But sometimes, the application of this phrase can become a bit twisted. We may start to conflate cultivating safe space for learning, discussing difficult truths, and facing our political reality with being "nice". Suddenly that phrase can morph into a tool for tone policing and maintaining superficial harmony at the expense of real justice. Instead of fostering genuine safety, it can be weaponized to discourage firm, necessary confrontation against racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression. When "safety" is framed as comfort—particularly for those with privilege—it can become an excuse to silence the anger, frustration, and truth-telling of those who experience harm. True safety isn't about being "nice" at all costs; it’s about ensuring that oppressive behaviors and ideologies are challenged, that accountability is prioritized, and that those most vulnerable are truly protected—not just from harsh words, but from systemic and interpersonal violence.


You Don't Have to Be a Safe Space for Hate.
You don't have to be nice about injustice, and you don't have to be frozen unsure of what action to take. You don't have to allow your body to become sick because of this reality either. Taking action is about self-care as much as it is about creating change. This time is overwhelming for all of us, but we can lean on each other.
